One Caribbean Nation. Derrick Scott/Gleaner Writer WASHINGTON D.C.: Jamaica-born Winsome Earle-Sears is the new lieutenant governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Earle-Sears is the first woman to serve as a lieutenant governor and the first black woman to hold a statewide office in the Commonwealth. The lieutenant governor officially serves as president of the Senate and presides over it and also serves as a member of several state boards, commissions and councils. Her oath of office was administered on the steps of the State Capitol building in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday by retired judge of the 13th Judicial Circuit of Virginia, Richard D. Taylor, Jr.  Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks is proud of Earle-Sears' elevation. "You have done so with uncommon grace and have in the process drawn renewed, decidedly positive attention as an exemplar of Jamaicans here, representing respected models of responsible citizenship and as able, contributing m

Letter From Brooklyn : A take on Barbados General Elections, 2022

Michael Headley One Caribbean Nation. Letter From Brooklyn By Michael Headley Earlier today, January 10th, a caller on VOB's (Voice Of Barbados) down to brass tacks, requested that speakers comments, for the January 19th, snap General Election, should refrain from engaging in Gutter Politics. I found this laughable because without some so-called Gutter Politics the electorate will be treated to a barrage of hyperbolic statements, from various politicians, regarding how many more houses, roads, schools, etcetera, that they will build, if they are elected or reelected.   The reigning Politicians, and aspiring ones, will extol the virtues of how they have, or will, skillfully handle the economy, tourism and other industries, agriculture, health care, unemployment, old age pension, increasing crime and lawlessness.  They are trying to convince   potential voters that they have the tools to steer the ship of state into a safe harbor.  But history shows that their rudderless policies o

Caribbean Sports : Eyes on Haynes, Sarwan as new West Indies selectors

One Caribbean Nation By Keith Holder Eyes on Haynes, Sarwan as new West Indies selectors The Most Honourable Desmond Haynes Ramnaresh Sarwan Unsurprisingly, there has been swift, mixed reaction to the appointment of The Most Honourable Desmond Haynes as lead selector of the West Indies senior men’s committee. And so, too, with Ramnaresh Sarwan who has been named as a selector to the West Indies men’s senior and Youth selection panels. In relation to Desmond Haynes, no sooner had the official release from Cricket West Indies (CWI) made the rounds yesterday just after 4 p.m. many opinions were being expressed on social media, some with high praise, others clearly mischievous and somewhat premature in determining how the illustrious former Barbados and West Indies opener, who captained both teams, is likely to perform. That’s the society we live in but for the sake of keeping on the positive side, let me first offer the 65-year-old Haynes heartiest congratulations and all the best in hi

One Caribbean Nation. Mr. Michael Holding The Mahogany Coconut Group, is proud to announce , Mr.  Michael Holding, legendary West Indies fast bowler, as our Caribbean personality of 2021. Mr. Holding, has emerged as a defender of the truth and has globally, exposed racism in the cricketing world.  His critically acclaimed book: Why We Kneel How We Rise( 2021), should be read by all Caribbean citizens,  who have perhaps, buried our heads in the sand regarding sports both on and off the field .We are therefore in great debt to Mr. Holding, for demonstrating that reaching great heights in ones chosen field , does not automatically guarantee immunity from the societal ills , that confront those who are considered ordinary citizens.  Racism, poverty, hunger and all other maladies, affect us all. Mr. Holding remains a credit to our New Caribbean Nation State and  his success and vision both on and off the field, will never be forgotten.                                 Caribbean Achievers 2
