Risqué: Owen Hits Mia, Again! Politics Barbadian Style

Image
The Caribbean Is One Nation. Risqué: Owen Hits Mia, Again!     By Pachamama Barbados National Flag The Mighty Sparrow tells a story about a lion which was mastered by a donkey. In this epic, the lion (MAM), despite his loud growl, role as dominate polygamist, sharp teeth, body built for combat and a propensity to instill fear was made to submit and be the mate of a mere donkey (OSA). Well, unlike OSA, the donkey is well known to be mild mannered, a carrier of huge burdens and in possession of a certain physical attribute that some fear. Fear of the expectation of a certain amount of joy and or pain that donkeys by their very nature are said to be able to inflict.   The recent broadside which Owen Seymour Arthur (OSA) inflicted on the prime ministerial ambitions of MAM continues to complicate political calculations in Barbados. Certainly, OSA seems intent on keeping his promise to his friends that he will never leave the BLP to MAM. In stating that the proposed di

Hurtling to self-destruction

The Caribbean Is One Nation. Hurtling to self-destruction If we think that the top-to-bottom lawlessness and overpowering crime that besiege the country today are portents of hopelessness in tomorrow, think again. It will be much worse. Those who will live here for the next 50 or 80 years (I will be long gone, thankfully) should be afraid...very afraid. This society is hurtling towards a collapse in just about every facet of life that defines civilisation. Oh, there will be more than enough wealth to satisfy the greed of the one per cent at the top, who will live in palatial prisons. Our diminishing hydrocarbon resources will even allow for the relatively good life among the top fifteen or twenty per cent of the population. But the rest of people are destined to dwell in a hellhole that has been long in the making, that is maturing nicely, if I may so describe degeneration. The more recent manifestation of this malaise is the increasing incidents of thuggery among young gir

Caribbean People Must Unite

Image
The Caribbean Is One Nation.                                                     The Caribbean people must unite! Map of Caribbean By Ruel E Lowe The Caribbean community is a collection of former colonies of Britain, that today are a collection of so called independent territories/nations/countries, drowning in a sea of red ink, red tape, inefficiency and poor governance. The logical question would be why? Considering all of these nations were once governed by the British, and have so many things in common, it would be logical for these countries to unite and become one country/nation/entity. Since there is no effective unity, we must ask the question one again, why? The simple answer is: it was not meant/designed to be, purposely by the colonizers. If we should take a step back and observe the situation carefully, very soon it will become evident.   Now let us take a keen careful look at the facts: 1. Under colonialism we

Michael Jackson's Doctor "consultant" In Trinidad and Tobago ?

The Caribbean Is One Nation.                                   Allowing Dr Murray a foot in the door? By  Dana  Seetahal Dr. Conrad Murray In the last few months there have been many issues plaguing the medical profession that appear to have been met with the line that “it is a grey area”. First there was the issue of cocaine pellets being found in the body of a patient and no report being made to the police. Then came the issue of reporting of suspected sexual offences by doctors in the case of minors. Lately the question of negligence has arisen in the case where the head of a seven-month foetus was sliced open during a Caesarean operation.  Now there is talk by the Minister of Health of Dr Conrad Murray acting as a “voluntary consultant” for heart surgeries. The minister has admitted that Dr Murray has “offered to assist” and media as far away as New Zealand are today reporting that Dr Murray is to be an unpaid (medical) consultant in this country. This last matter

Domestic Violence In Barbados

Image
The Caribbean Is One Nation. Barbados Flag Once again, the self appointed guardians of our society are looking for   scapegoats, to blame for the dramatic increase in domestic violence. They are attempting to blame women for being murdered by jealous, possessive men, who believe that in many instances, economic dependence by these women ,is a pathway to maiming and killing them at their pleasure ! Misinformed groups such as MESA(Men's Educational Support Association) are doing a great disservice to our country by trivializing domestic violence. Any humane society should have a zero level tolerance policy on domestic violence and there should be a special court to bring these cannibals, who are liquidating our women folk, to justice with great speed. The Mahogany Coconut Group has called for progressive legislation that will give state agencies and our police greater legal rights in dealing with instances of domestic violence. Our calls have fallen on deaf ears and blind ey

Peace And Love Academic Scholarship (PALAS)

The Caribbean Is One Nation. PALAS hopes to help 100 students this year Students at the 2013-2014 PALAS awards ceremony at the UWI, Mona campus THE demand for help usually surpasses what they are able to give each year, but Peace and Love Academic Scholarship (PALAS) Inc hopes to help 100 students get closer to academic success this year by offering them financial assistance. Since being launched in 2010, the international organisation has provided 115 scholarships and 12 computers valued at over US$50,000 to needy high school and tertiary level students in Jamaica. The scholarship was launched in honour and memory of Jamaican student Vanessa Campbell, an aspiring artiste who was found with her throat slashed behind the Greater Portmore Post Office in St Catherine a few years ago. Founder and Executive Director Rula Brown said 60 new scholarships were awarded last year to 16 high school and 44 university students. The selection committee had chosen these students from 87

Skin Bleaching ! Where Are We Going ?

Image
The Caribbean Is One Nation. Skin bleaching! Where are we going? by Ruel E. Lowe I sometimes wonder if this is the same country, Jamaica that was the land of birth of that stalwart, Marcus M. Garvey the father of Pan-Africanism! Marcus Garvey I was almost reduced to tears when I viewed the skin "Bleaching" video! Seeing my poor uninformed/unfortunate brothers and sisters behaving in an outlandish and dangerous manner, displaying self-hate and a lack of love for self and kind! Where did this self-loathing/self-hate come from? Just think! Yes you got it! Four hundred years plus, of brain washing and constant reinforcement through the media and other institutionalized methods of persuasion and entreaty! That has been responsible for many of us doing things that are not to the benefit of us and kind! I am issuing words of warning and caution, to those of us brothers and sisters, who are more self-aware, to be very careful in our criticism/mocking/ridi

Were we (Jamaica / Caribbean Better off under Colonialism ?

Image
The Caribbean Is One Nation. Were we (Jamaica/Caribbean) better off under Colonialism? by Ruel E. Lowe This was a question posed by a very charming intelligent, articulate, patriotic sister, who was disgusted, with what she saw, taking place in her beloved country Jamaica! She questioned whether any progress has been made under/since Independence, by Jamaica, and concluded that Jamaica was better off as a British colony?   I went along with most of her factual views, until she stated that Jamaica was better under colonialism, that is where we parted company! If we only analyze the action/behavior/results from the surface, without finding the cause, we will end up blaming the victim, and coming up with the wrong conclusions, if we use a false premise! Now let us take a keen careful look at the facts: 1. Under colonialism we were always thought of and treated as subjects of the colonial master (servants/second class citizens, not as equals). To many who might n

When Did Jamaica Get Poor?

Image
Jamaica Flag The Caribbean Is One Nation.      When did Jamaica get poor?   by Ruel E. Lowe  In a time when more children/young adults are attending secondary and tertiary institutions, instead of the country/society ascending, it is declining socially and financially! That is rather puzzling, actually that defies logic!   Digressing for a moment, I have always believed the all we need to know is revealed to us and around us, but, many of us lack the ability to discern/observe/comprehend/accept. Should we take time out to take a close look at the society today, it will become apparent that there has been gradual erosion of the moral fabric/foundation, a loss of the work ethics past generations were famous for have been replaced by scams, trickery, begging, violence and crime. I could give examples of each, but we are well aware of our shortcomings and issues.   Our music which has always been our thermometer and barometer, is the ideal story teller of the societ

The Killing of Dr. Rodney

Image
The killing of Dr Rodney By Rickey Singh NOW that Carnival 2014 is over, perhaps the people of Trinidad and Tobago could spare some time to reflect on developments in other Caricom states. One such country is Guyana. An issue currently in sharp focus in Guyana is a probe into the killing, decades ago, of the internationally famous historian and crusader for freedom and social justice Walter Rodney. Thirty-three years after this intellectual and writer was killed in a bomb blast in his car on the night of June 13, 1980, in Georgetown, a three-member team of Caribbean legal experts has been established to begin an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the killing of Dr Rodney.  “Assassination” has always been the unofficial verdict of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), the party of which Dr Rodney was a founder-leader, as well as from thousands of its supporters across Guyana. They continue to blame the administration of late president Forbes Burnham for the murder.
