The often-ridiculed political progressives in the region are perhaps reflecting with some degree of satisfaction, at the assistance being offered by the Cuban government and greatly needed by some region governments and health officials, as we battle with the rampant COVID -19.
The Cuban health professionals, who are extremely popular, are the results of an allegiance to the then Fidel Castro regime, going back to its darkest days. We recall persistent attempts made by successive American presidents, to drive a wedge between the Cuban government and those Caribbean leaders, who refused to bend to the most powerful global power and its wishes to destroy the Cuban people and their revolution.
Throughout that dark period, progressive forces were making note of the educational thrust of the Cuban government, to instill in their citizens , that education must be used for the common good and not solely the accumulation of vast personal wealth as is customary throughout the region. Education grounded in perverse elitism, will produce elitist professionals, who are  only dedicated to their own personal economic and upward social mobility.
As the growth of Cuban medical professionals reached impressive heights, many economically disadvantaged youths from throughout the region sought and were invited to pursue studies in medicine, dentistry and other fields. Unfortunately, when they returned to their respective countries, they were forced to obtain so-called regional certification before they could be employed. Rallying against this refusal, has engaged the energy of progressive regionalists for quite a few decades.
However, this professional snobbery was always rejected by the peoples of the region. Many citizens, including regional leaders, sought and received medical treatment in Cuba although many governments found themselves at the mercy of the powerful professional lobbies within their individual societies. While we were ambivalent, Cubans and Cuban trained medical professionals, were to be found wherever needed in other countries.
The CONVID-19 and the magnitude of its presence have stretched regional health resources.  Those progressives and leaders within the region, who embraced the Cuban health system, should therefore feel more than vindicated, in standing with the Cuban people.
