The USA elections of November 2020, less than a month away, is of tremendous interest to Caribbean residents within the Diaspora. While other emigrant groups are often highlighted in the media, Caribbean citizens tend to be ignored because as a voting bloc, they are not known to be very public, in their political organization.

However, the undeniable truth is that most Caribbean citizens are black and the racists undertones and overtones of the current campaign, has infuriated this apparently politically quiet, group of citizens. It is therefore quite safe to say, that most Caribbean voters will vote Democrat in November.

The Caribbean finds itself in an economic vortex and battling the iniquitous COVID-19, has thrown all the economies into a debilitating tailspin. Many of the countries depend on tourism for their economic life blood and it is predicted that the economic turmoil, will continue because tourism will not recover under three or four years.

Furthermore, America has not been over generous to the region in recent times. The only real interests America has in the region, are the political landscape in Venezuela because it intends to cripple the current government and to ensure that the newly elected government of Guyana dances to America’s tune. Unfortunately, the government seems bent on doing exactly what America wants.

We are also more than aware that America is very concerned by the increasing activities of China, that is assisting some countries with construction and other capital projects. Currently, the USA, is using soft diplomacy to indicate its concerns of China’s outreach in the region. We are quite certain that regardless of the outcome of the elections, this approach will continue.

Against this background, it is obvious that the coming USA elections are of significant interest to Caribbean nationals in the Diaspora and the region.
