Keep on Batting Floyd !

It looks like Floyd Reifer's short innings at the wicket,  in St. George North, resulted in the hitting of a towering six over the boundary.  In a peculiar way he has shown leadership skills, by probably getting quick action, to critical issues that he had raised in the recent by-election contest.  He even caused a stir, on the eve of the by-election, that drew some heavy hitters to hastily come to the dump site to unload on him.  Some commentators weren't sure if it was a press conference or a paid political advertisement and one had to apologize for making the wrong call.   

After the innings had finished the grounds staff  didn't even have time to cover the pitch because in a November 18th article, by Sandy Deane (Out of the pits)  Prime Minister Mia Mottley  is already hoping to eliminate pit toilets by 2027. 

 And in another  article by Randy Bennett (Fix coming for controversial dump) Ricardo Marshall,  Program Director in the Ministry of the Environment and National Beautification, said at a Townhall meeting, that a solution has been found to bring a stop to the horrible stench and persistent smoking condition at the illegal dump, in Lower Estate, St George.  Mr. Marshall also chairs the technical committee to  find a solution to help the residents with this issue.  He said that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) would also play a collaborative role.   The project also  has the support of Colonel Jeffrey Bostic, Minister of Health and Wellness, who said that it will start as soon as possible. 

 So Floyd keep your bat in your hand, stay padded, there's no need to pull up stumps yet because the game is still on.  You may be on your way to a maiden century with those two master strokes. These are not idiotic issues.

Teachers and Politics

For some time, the society as a whole has been vehement in blaming our teachers for what many consider as deteriorating educational standards. Mahogany Coconut is of the view that such blame is unfounded and unfair. When we examine our educational system, we conclude that the vast majority of our teachers are competent and extremely professional.  However, we do not subscribe to the view that they are poorly paid.  Taking into consideration our resources, their salaries are comparable if not more attractive than those in many developing countries.  We also suggest that our school plant, at all levels, is vastly superior to what obtains in many of our neighboring island states. Since the mid 70’s, the collective DLP/BLP government, has systematically succeeded in damaging the image of our teachers and the general public has supported the DLP/BLP.
