SIR HILARY BECKLES, DR ANTHONY FAUCI UP FOR US HONOURS
Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, will next week add another prestigious award to his list of accolades.
Reverend Al Sharpton, President and Founder of the US National Action Network (NAN), today announced that the organisation’s Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Day awards would be conferred on Sir Hilary as well as Dr Anthony Fauci, at the annual breakfast event on MLK Day, on Monday.
This is the 30th anniversary for the awards by which the work and the legacy of Dr King are celebrated and persons honoured with a view to refocusing and sustaining his dream.
Sir Hilary is recognised for his global advocacy, academic scholarship and intellectual leadership in support of social justice, institutional equity, and economic development for marginalised and oppressed ethnicities and nations.
Sir Hilary, who is also President of Universities Caribbean, Chairman of the Caribbean Examinations Council, Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission and Advisor on Sustainable Development to former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will receive the “Peace and Freedom Award”.
During Sir Hilary’s stewardship, the world’s most reputable ranking agency, Times Higher Education, has ranked The UWI among the top 600 universities in the world for 2019 and 2020, among the 40 best universities in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2018 and 2019, then among the top 20 in 2020.
The UWI has been the only Caribbean-based university to make the prestigious lists.
Dr Fauci, famous American physician and renowned Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) will receive the “Lifetime Community Service Award”.
He has been at the forefront of the ongoing fight against the coronavirus pandemic in the United States of America.
Prior awardees include the 42nd President of the United States Bill Clinton, Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Music, and the 82nd Attorney General of the USA, Eric Holder. Event speakers have included Vice President-Elect Joe Biden and United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
The Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Day ceremony and awards will be held in Washington, DC on January 18, 2021 from 11 a.m. (EST/Jamaica)/12 noon (AST/Eastern Caribbean).
The event will be streamed live on UWItv’s website www. uwitv.org, cable channels on Flow EVO and Facebook page.

V was a well-known gay citizen, who lived in my beloved hometown of Britton’s Hill, in the parish of St. Michael, Barbados. My earliest recollection of V was his apparent penchant for dressing in white. I seldom saw him in a long pants, and he walked with an amazing rhythm. One Caribbean Nation As we celebrate International Womens’ Day, we are cognizant of the role our Caribbean women have played in the cultural social and economic growth of our region and evolving Caribbean civilization. They , like our men , have risen from the depths and decadence of slavery , to the highest political and corporate ladders in the region. They have given birth, to millions and have made and continue to make significant contributions to those in the Diaspora. In many cases, where they were not the biological mothers, they nurtured, cared and developed those , who were deprived of parenthood , and socio-economic hope. They are in our classrooms, directing young and fragile minds , how to navigate a world that we in the region , must forever avoid being dragged into conflicts of the so-called super powers. They are pursuing all the opportunities of our tertiary educational institutions, including the University of the West Undies, often in higher numbers than our men. I
