Racism Alive and Very Well In Beautiful Barbados

One Caribbean Nation.

“As a people and as a country, we still prefer to ignore that racism exists in our beautiful country.”

“Like I said, racism in Barbados is just swept under the carpet, appearing at times and causing push -back in a country that is more than 90 per cent black.”

“It is time to deal with the matter once and for all.”

Racism Alive and very well in Beautiful Barbados

The Mahogany Coconut Group takes note of the recent racist outburst of white Barbadian, Clifford Corbin. Corbin has familial connections to one of the most prominent business families on the island. We are not going to immerse ourselves, in pseudo intellectualizing about racism in Barbados. Pseudo and armchair psychologists and psychiatrists are a dime a dozen on the island.

One of the country’s major past times, is denying that there is racism. Ironically, Corbin, will be defended by some black Barbadians, who will say he has a right to speak his mind and that he is only one “white man”. The issue will then fade until another member of any of the minorities makes similar statements.

Black Barbadians make up more than 90 percent of the population therefore the MCG rejects the call for a Truth and Reconciliation Committee to “look at racism” in the country. Black Barbadians have no truths to find and nothing to reconcile. They are not the ones practicing racism and insulting the whites and other minorities. They are not the ones telling them that they are lazy and useless, while exploiting them because of where they “come from” or the color of their skins. Quite the opposite, Black Barbadians are known for their ready acceptance of both local whites and other minorities among them expatriates included.

As quoted at the beginning of this article: “As a people and a country, we still prefer to ignore that racism exists in our beautiful country.”. And that is the major problem with Black Barbadians. They want to believe that there is racism everywhere else but their country. And the whites know that this myth guarantees them almost perpetual power regardless of their very small numbers. Sad but true.
