Voice of Barbados, Starcom Network and its
sponsors, must be congratulated for the innovative and educational
program Radio School, aired at 3:32 PM, from Monday to Thursday on Voice
of Barbados, 92.9 FM. The targeted audience are pupils, whose education
has been somewhat interrupted by the COVID-19 virus. However, there can
be no educational pause because the pupils still must prepare for the
Common Entrance examination a.k.a. 11 Plus, at a future date. With
its promotional catchy phrase, from age ' seven to seventy -seven', the
net is cast wide so that all and sundry can
participate. Voice of Barbados, Starcom Network and its

In his pedagogical
role, the affable educator Uncle Jeff Broomes meticulously guides,
the mostly young respondents, through the
fundamentals of English and Mathematics, to hone their
skills, for exam readiness. Uncle Jeff emphasizes the importance of
proving answers, and listening attentively to the questions, before
answering or submitting work. Uncle Jeff is quick to
compliment the many articulate and polite students, who seem eager to
learn. And if they answer incorrectly, Uncle Jeff takes the time to
patiently walk them through the problem, to arrive at a correct answer.
He always encourages them to work with him. Also, his humorous
banter, with host Larry Mayers, especially about Uncle Jeff's soup, without
dumplings, brings some levity to the program.
Radio School is a
fantastic program, and it augurs well for the children and the society at
large. After all, they are the future, and they must be adequately
prepared educationally. I am hoping that all parents and guardians are
exploiting this occasion to let their children get an invaluable Radio school
education. Keep up the good work Starcom, Larry and Uncle Jeff et
al. Maybe, after COVID-19 dissipates. radio school can
be produced on the weekend, to accommodate the less fortunate
children, whose parents cannot afford a paid tutor.
