The Mahogany Coconut Group joins
the region in congratulating Dr. Keith Rowley and the Peoples National Movement
(PNM) on their victory in Monday’s (September7th, 2015) Trinidad and Tobago
General Elections. We are extremely relieved to see Ms. Kamla Persad- Bissessar
removed from the office of Prime Minister and equally relieved with the removal
of Mr. Jack Warner from public office. We remain by our position that Persad-
Bissessar and Warner were nothing more than embarrassments to the good people
of Trinidad and Tobago. We also stand by our declaration that the outgoing administration
was the most corrupt to emerge since the post independence era in the region.
Within sixteen months of its
election under the coalition of the Peoples Partnership, we were gathering
information about blatant corruption and the favoring of one race over the
other in granting various government contracts and other privileges. Our well placed
sources in Trinidad and Tobago alerted us to several instances of bold faced
corruption. We then carried a series of articles very critical of the last
regime and we concluded that not only were Persad-Bissessar and Warner
embarrassments and had disgraced their offices but that the same had extended
and encompassed the United National Congress (UNC), which was the major player
coalition government.
However, we are not oblivious to the
fact that the Peoples National Movement has engaged in nefarious activity and
it certainly cannot even pretend to claim, that when it controlled the reins of
power that it was free of corruption and graft. However, we support the voices
of the people of Trinidad and Tobago and hereby serve notice on Rowley that
should he and his administration go back down the old road of political
skullduggery, we would not hesitate in calling for his and the PNM’s political heads!
For Mr. Rowley, this has been a
monumental political victory. Indeed, it can be reasonably argued, that he has
come back from the brink of political extinction. We therefore hope that he can
transform such a personal triumph to the benefit of all Trinidad and Tobago. We
sense that our wonderful brothers and sisters in T&T are willing to put
country first.
A strong and vibrant Trinidad and
Tobago is vital to our region’s success.
Mr. Rowley and the Peoples National Movement cannot afford to disappoint.
We wish them well.
