SPRING

LETTER FROM BROOKLYN

After a relatively mild winter, Spring was ushered in on March 20.  And the signs of Spring can be seen at Canarsie Park, on Seaview Ave, in Brooklyn, New York and local gardens on the blocks.  The monotonous chirping of the Sparrows and the cheerful whistles of the American Robins can be heard in the park, as the birds fly from tree to tree.  Colonies of Gulls and flocks of Geese can be seen overhead, before landing, to forage for food.  Doves can also be heard cooing in the distance.  As if not to be outdone, the early Spring blooms of Crocuses, Tulips and Daffodils are quickly emerging and showing their beautiful flowering colors.  The buds on the deciduous trees are bursting out, and soon their branches will be full of leaves and fruits, to give shelter, nesting sites and food, to the birds and insects. The earthworms, on the ground, are also an ample food source.

In Climatology, Spring is the season between Winter and Summer when temperatures begin to rise.  In the Northern Hemisphere, it is defined as extending from the vernal equinox - two moments in the year when the sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are of equal length.

Springtime is comparable to a rebirth, as all the elements, of life, are revived and awaken, after a long, cold sleep. The warming sun seems to exude more energy and walkers are beginning to quicken their pace - because literally and psychologically, old-man winter is over - and it's time to embrace the season and rush to experience every living moment. The time has also come to throw off the drab winter coats and dark clothes, in exchange for the lively and brightly colored Spring fashions.  Even the accompanying Spring showers won't hinder the spring fever and excitement from happening.

While these actions are rapidly occurring, the Global warming fanatics, who jet across the globe, with their 'Henny Penny' doomsday predictions - while leaving huge carbon footprints - must be shocked to see the universe unfolding as it should.

Let's hope for a Happy, healthy and enjoyable Spring.
