NEW YORK, United States, Wednesday September 18, 2013 – When it comes to happiness, Trinidadians are smiles ahead of the rest of the Caribbean, according to the results of the latest World Happiness Report from the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
The second edition of the report echoes the findings of the 2012 Gallup World Survey which ranked Trinidad as the fifth-happiest country on earth.
In the 2013 UN study, the twin-island state placed 31st overall in the world, ahead of countries including oil-rich Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, as well as Spain, Thailand and South Korea.
Six key variables factored into the study’s conclusions: “Real GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, having someone to count on, perceived freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption and generosity.”
Employing data covering the three-year period from 2010 to 2012, the report was edited by a number of academics including Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and special advisor to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
“There is now a rising worldwide demand that policy be more closely aligned with what really matters to people as they themselves characterize their well-being,” Professor Sachs said in a release. “More and more world leaders are talking about the importance of well-being as a guide for their nations and the world.
“The World Happiness Report 2013 offers rich evidence that the systematic measurement and analysis of happiness can teach us a lot about ways to improve the world’s well-being and sustainable development,” the professor noted.
Only five Caribbean countries were included in the list, with the UN saying that it only covered countries for which all of the data was available.
The other regional countries ranked on the list were Suriname (40), Jamaica (75), the Dominican Republic (95) and Haiti (126).
The report found that Latin America and the Caribbean, along with Sub-Saharan Africa, had shown the greatest increases in “life evaluations,” with more than 75 percent of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean showing “significant increases” in average happiness .

We are not surprised. We have always maintained that Trinidadians  have a genuine happy approach to life . Even in times of crisis and other difficulties , they never lose their sense of humour and are natural and entertaining to others at all times.

One Caribbean Nation As we celebrate International Womens’ Day, we are cognizant of the role our Caribbean women have played in the cultural social and economic growth of our region and evolving Caribbean civilization. They , like our men , have risen from the depths and decadence of slavery , to the highest political and corporate ladders in the region. They have given birth, to millions and have made and continue to make significant contributions to those in the Diaspora. In many cases, where they were not the biological mothers, they nurtured, cared and developed those , who were deprived of parenthood , and socio-economic hope. They are in our classrooms, directing young and fragile minds , how to navigate a world that we in the region , must forever avoid being dragged into conflicts of the so-called super powers. They are pursuing all the opportunities of our tertiary educational institutions, including the University of the West Undies, often in higher numbers than our men. I
